Student Loan

Description: Helps students enrolled in a full-time post-secondary program with the costs of tuition, books and living expenses

Guarantor Requirements: Depends on the applicant's circumstances (click on application for details).

Repayment Terms:

If you are a student: Payments of $50 per month while enrolled in a full-time post secondary program (for up to four years) and then $25 per month per $1000 initially borrowed after that. The borrower must submit proof of re-enrolment in full time study to HFLA in writing by September 1st of each year. If said proof is not submitted, it will be assumed that the borrower is no longer a full-time student and payments will automatically be increased to $25 per month per $1000 initially borrowed.

If you are the parent of a student: Payments of $25 per month per $1000 borrowed.

Frequently asked questions about our student loan program:

How much can someone borrow?

Most student loans are for $6,000 or $12,000

Who can apply?

Applicants must be Jewish and be over the age of 19.  If a student is under 19, their parent is encouraged to apply for the loan instead.

Applicants must demonstrate financial need. This looks different for each family but, generally speaking, means that an applicant and/or their family must have limited assets.

What is a guarantor and do I need one or more for this loan program?

A guarantor is someone who agrees to be responsible for the debt of a borrower should they default on their loan. In most cases, one guarantor is needed for every $6,000 borrowed from HFLA.

SPECIAL NOTE: HFLA is piloting a new program called ACCESS which is specifically designed to assist students in need who may not have a qualified guarantor. If this applies to you, please complete our application by indicating that you would like to be considered for our ACCESS pilot program and we would be delighted to consider you.

Is there an application deadline?

No, but the bulk of our ACCESS Student Loans funds will be distributed this spring and, as such, we encourage all applicants to apply as soon as possible.

Is there really no interest or fees? What is the catch?

There is no catch! We are a charitable organization and we use money donated from members of the Jewish community and lend it out to people who could use a helping hand. We charge absolutely no interest and no fees - we exist solely to help.
