“HFLA has given me the opportunity to relax and earn my degree and now I can start a family with the stability of job with a regular paycheque.”
I decided to pursue my love of music after graduating with my BA and have been fairly successful but once my girlfriend decided to get married and start a family, I realized I should to go back to school and get my Education degree. I continued making music with my band and worked as a sous chef while going to school but gigs and royalties from my music were not a reliable source of income. Debts crept up while I was at school and once I started my practicum, I didn’t have time to work. This loan helped me pay back some of the high interest debts and keep me afloat until I landed my dream teaching job: English and Foods.
The Hebrew Free Loan Association (HFLA) helps people help themselves by granting interest-free loans to members of BC's Jewish Community.
We offer people a helping hand, or hand up, not a hand out. In the process, loan recipients maintain dignity and self-sufficiency as they repay their interest-free loans. Our organization is founded on the mitzvah of Gemilut Chesed — Deeds of Loving Kindness.
