Check List Process

  • Choose your loan type
  • Within 2 business days of submission of an application, an HFLA volunteer Director will contact the applicant to set up an in-person interview
  • Guarantors will be interviewed to confirm their eligibility
  • HFLA Board of Directors meets to review applications twice a month
  • If the loan is approved, the borrower signs a Promissory Note (legal document) committing to repay the loan
  • The guarantor(s) sign legally binding guarantees committing to repay the loan if the borrower is unable to do so
  • Once all paperwork is signed, a cheque will be disbursed to the borrower
  • Upon issuance of the loan proceeds, HFLA requires a preauthorized withdrawal agreement to retrieve monthly loan payments automatically
  • Borrowers begin making payments within 30 days of receiving the loan
  • All loans must be repaid in full not more than 40 months after the loan is received. Payments are $25 per month, per $1,000 borrowed with a minimum payment of $75/month. For example:
  • $5,000 loan:  $125/month
  • $7,000 loan:  $175/month
  • $10, 000 loan:  $250/month
  • $1,500 emergency loan: $75/ month (This loan is repaid more quickly)
  • NOTE: We are closed on all Jewish and statutory holidays.  Office hours may vary.

About Us

Tribute Cards

The Hebrew Free Loan Association (HFLA) helps people help themselves by granting interest-free loans to members of BC's Jewish Community.

We offer people a helping hand, or hand up, not a hand out. In the process, loan recipients maintain dignity and self-sufficiency as they repay their interest-free loans. Our organization is founded on the mitzvah of Gemilut Chesed — Deeds of Loving Kindness.
