Our History
The
concept of Hebrew Free Loans has been a part of Jewish Vancouver
for over 90 years. The first Hebrew Free Loan in Vancouver was
established in March 1915 and lasted until the 1930's.
A similar
organization, The Achdut Society, was started in 1927 and lasted
until the 1960's. In 1979, the "Hebrew Assistance Association"
was re-established in Vancouver to provide interest-free loans.
In 2004, in conjunction with the Association's 25th anniversary,
it was renamed The Hebrew Free Loan Association of Vancouver.
In this past
quarter century, we have granted over 1,300 loans totalling more
than $3.8 million with virtually all loans having been repaid
in full.
Our organization
operates very efficiently we have no office and we rely
largely on our working board plus two part-time administrators.
Hebrew Free Loan Association of Vancouver has never been a beneficiary
of Federation or the United Way and as such, we have relieved
these organizations of some financial burden by providing loans,
many of which would otherwise have been welfare grants. Most importantly,
we have allowed so many in our community to retain their dignity
with a "hand up", not a "hand-out", in difficult
circumstances.
As we reflect
on the role that we, and our predecessor organizations have played
over the last 90 years, we must endeavour, in the coming years,
to find new and innovative ways to help those less fortunate in
our community. By doing so, we will be able to continue this great
and ancient tradition of "gemillut chesed" deeds
of loving kindness far into the future.
